CROSSING THIN ICE:

Crossing Thin Ice examines the transition parents need to make from parenting children to developing a young person that will thrive on their own. It uses research from Ohio State, UCLA, Fuller Seminary and YTN along with actual student videos to offer parent’s highly practical suggestions that will help them maintain influence through the preteen and teenage years. Eighteen practical concepts combine with five specific activities that help parents increase or regain influence in their young peoples lives and chart a course for success both for today and the day they leave home. Combined with principles of shepherding from real life shepherds and the Good Shepherd’s approach to His disciples, these concepts and activities transform parents’ relationships with their young people into a productive relationship that enables them to succeed.

RESEARCH:

The top three reasons students disconnect from parents and their faith based upon YTN’s qualitative research with 2,500 teens from 25 states and Canada are: the parent teen relationship, youth ministry culture and lack of preparation for the transition to life on their own. Understanding and addressing these issues helps parents and churches set their young people up to thrive on their own.

Research Statistics:

  • 26% of college freshmen drop out in their freshmen year and less then 30% graduate with a degree. (UCLA)
  • UCLA, Ohio State, Fuller Seminary and YTN Research show that students are unprepared for life on their own.
  • 70% of 18 to 22 year olds take a break from the church and less then 35% return by Age 30 (Lifeway)
  • 69% of teens want more involvement from their parents…just not the type they are receiving. (Nat. Survey on Youth and Religion)
  • 961,000 Christians graduate per year, 673,000 take a break from church and less than 230,000 return to church by age 30. (Going, Going, Gone)-
  • YTN has conducted 400 video taped interviews with teens in Arizona, Colorado, Washington, and California.

TESTIMONIES:

Ministry Leaders
“From a father’s point of view, Crossing Thin Ice is life changing! I don’t know how else to describe it. My wife and I have read many parenting books but none of them impacted us like this.. I am constantly looking for shepherding moments instead of getting on my kids for something! It has made a difference in how they respond. From a Pastor’s point of view this has healthy relationships written all over it! Healthy individuals make up healthy relationships…they also make healthy churches! Pastors should be jumping all over this!!!”
- Mike McGinnes, Senior Pastor, Syracuse, NY

“I was extremely pleased with the whole weekend. I spoke with my Youth leadership team last evening and they also were very impressed and pleased with the weekend. The parents that I spoke with on Sunday after attending the CTI Conference were so grateful to have had the opportunity to sit under your teaching. They sincerely appreciated the common sense approach that you took and the challenge to move from a protection mode to a Shepherding mode in their parenting. I know that a few of the families, where only one spouse was able to attend and will both be attending the conference at Seattle Christian in October.”
- Dave Anderson, Family Pastor, Edmonds, WA

Parents:
“You Changed My Son Through Me!”- Rick Rablin, Father of 17 year old We have followed through with your homework assignments from the seminar and taken our oldest out to eat twice. We had a great time and she loved it. She and I have taken the Strengths Finder test and she loved that. She is loving this whole idea that we are helping her to discover what she wants to do with her life and make her own plan and that we are here to support her and help her succeed. It has made her more enthusiastic about school and her future and way more communicative. Thanks so much for your seminar!
- Bernesce Teem, Mom of Pre-teens and Teens

“The “CTI” Seminar brought me to a new place in parenting. It’s hard to put into words all that spoke to my heart. I have three teens–all “good” kids, and doing well in school. The seminar helped me to understand their strong need for community as they head off to college. It also helped me realize that as a parent, I have a pivotal role to play–that of loving support for their times of triumph as well as their times of failure. Jeff Schadt has done extensive research into their world. So many feel the pressure to be perfect, which can lead to a “double-life” syndrome. Jeff gives practical suggestions about how to prevent this, and how to prepare teens now for what they will face tomorrow.”
- Patty Camloh, Mom of Pre-teens and Teens

Crossing Thin Ice Conference

Jeff Schadt, Founder of the Youth Transition Network and author of Going, Going, Gone will present the secrets discovered from talking with 2,500 teens that enable parents to have more influence than the world or peers.

Learn ways to:

  • Open up communication
  • Draw upon Internal Motivation for change
  • Keep them from burning out on God
  • Set them up to Succeed on their own
